Fiji is prepared to become the official base for the regional policing centres of excellence established under the Pacific Policing Initiative (PPI). These centres will provide training, assistance, research, best practices, and leadership focused on specific areas of policing.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka made this announcement while giving his keynote speech at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2024 Pacific Policing Event held in Sagafili Village, Samoa, last week. He stated, “Part of the Pacific Policing Initiative is the establishment of regional policing centres of excellence. I’m pleased that Fiji can step forward as a host for one of these centres. We have the necessary facilities and supporting infrastructure ready for this regional initiative.”

The PPI aims to unify policing frameworks throughout the Pacific, grounded in three main pillars: (1) Regional Centres of Excellence, (2) a Deployable Pacific Police Support Group (PPSG), and (3) a Coordination Hub in Brisbane. Rabuka added that further support from Australia for their Black Rock training facility in Nadi would be beneficial, highlighting that it serves not only military purposes but also functions as a police and disaster relief centre.
