Fiji is solidifying its status as a prime locale for international television productions. The nation is set to welcome the return of popular titles, including Survivor for its 11th season and Love Island for its eighth season, further enhancing its reputation as a sought-after filming destination.
Jone Robertson, CEO of Film Fiji, emphasizes that the return of these prominent shows reflects the confidence production crews have in Fiji’s robust systems and skilled workforce to manage complicated filming projects. Approximately 600 crew members are expected to work in Fiji for Survivor over a span of five months, showcasing the scale and commitment of these productions.
Robertson notes the importance of seamless coordination with various government agencies, including the Ministry of Immigration and Customs, as well as the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) and local service providers, in facilitating successful filming experiences. He highlights that Fiji’s safe environment and breathtaking landscapes provide an attractive alternative for productions compared to many other countries.
In the last year alone, more than 900 local crew members have been employed directly in these productions. Coupled with additional personnel involved in supporting services, the economic impact on the local workforce is significant. Film Fiji aims to maintain high international standards while simultaneously increasing local involvement in the industry.
Collaboration with the immigration department is also recognized by Robertson as essential for keeping Fiji competitive in the global production arena. The establishment of formal agreements and memorandums of understanding (MOUs) between Film Fiji and government agencies aids in streamlining the permitting and approval processes, fostering trust and encouraging producers to make repeat visits.
Ultimately, Fiji’s combination of safety, stunning natural beauty, and strong governmental support positions it as a leading destination for international filming projects, contributing to job creation and economic growth within the local community.
