The Ministry of Mineral Resources in Fiji is implementing advanced airborne geophysical survey technology to enhance groundwater assessments. Minister Filimoni Vosarogo highlighted the limitations of the traditional Electrical Resistivity Tomography method, which he described as slow and labor-intensive. With groundwater often being a concealed resource, the ministry aims to increase the efficiency and accuracy of its surveys.

This innovative technology, launched last month, enables quicker and more comprehensive analysis of large areas, especially in regions on Viti Levu and Vanua Levu that are experiencing water scarcity and are not currently served by the Fiji Water Authority. Vosarogo expressed optimism, stating that the ministry hopes to elevate its groundwater survey success rate from 80% to 90% using this new approach.

The initiative involves collaboration with private drilling companies over the next three years, aimed at helping communities access groundwater more effectively. This ongoing project aligns with the government’s broader commitment to improving water access, particularly for underserved rural communities, enhancing public health and quality of life for residents.

Opposition MP Jone Usamate raised valid concerns about how these new technologies will contribute to effective water management, particularly regarding the estimation of the groundwater resources, a critical component for sustainable management. In response, Vosarogo assured that expert advice was sought before adopting these new methods, emphasizing their significant potential for positive impact.

Overall, the move towards adopting such advanced technology signifies a proactive step in addressing Fiji’s water resource challenges, fostering a future where everyone has access to clean and reliable water, thereby contributing to improved health, economic growth, and community resilience. The ministry’s efforts capture a hopeful commitment to sustainable development as Fiji navigates its path towards enhanced water security.
