The People’s Alliance Party has expressed its support for Minister for Public Works Ro Filipe Tuisawau’s recent call to review the increase in electricity tariffs. General Secretary Sila Balawa emphasized that the Minister’s concerns are valid and resonate with the everyday experiences of Fijians who are impacted by rising electricity costs.
Balawa pointed out that while the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) operates independently, it is essential for it to take into account the concerns raised by government ministers, who serve as representatives of the people. He stressed that the call for additional consultations does not undermine the FCCC’s independence; rather, it reflects a responsible approach that prioritizes the needs and interests of the citizens.
Furthermore, Balawa highlighted the importance of regulatory decisions that combine technical analyses with the practical realities faced by the population. He noted that engaging in meaningful consultations can help bolster public trust and ensure that consumer interests are upheld, suggesting that a balanced approach could lead to more equitable outcomes for all Fijians.
This dialogue around electricity tariffs indicates a growing acknowledgment of the financial challenges faced by households and small businesses, creating an opportunity for community-focused solutions that might alleviate some of the burden associated with increased energy costs.
