Energy Fiji Ltd (EFL) and the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) are actively engaging the community regarding the proposed increase in electricity tariffs across the nation. As part of their awareness program, representatives set up booths at Rups Mega Centre in Nakasi and outside New World Supermarket in Valelevu, aiming to gather feedback from local residents.
Although the turnout at these booths was modest, the discussions revealed significant concerns among consumers regarding the potential financial impact of the tariff hike. Sanjay Narayan, a resident of Nakasi, expressed apprehension about the raised costs. He noted that the price of living is already high in Fiji, and any increase in electricity bills would likely exacerbate the economic burden. “If we don’t see it in our bills, businesses will pass that down to us when we do our shopping,” he stated, highlighting the interconnected nature of costs.
Ranjana Lal, another local, expressed relief upon learning that her electricity bill would not significantly increase. However, she echoed Mr. Narayan’s concerns, emphasizing that businesses would inevitably transfer the costs to consumers. “I believe such increments are not good for Fijians as we are already struggling with the rising cost of living,” she remarked.
Ana Raluve, who also engaged with the EFL team, reported being assured that, due to her usage of cash billing, she would not feel the impact of the proposed increase. Nonetheless, she empathized with those who would be affected, declaring that Fiji is ill-prepared for any additional financial strain. “The price of everything has really gone up, and our people won’t be able to bear any increment, whether in bills or in other goods,” Ms. Raluve lamented.
The feedback from this community engagement has highlighted the pressing concerns of Fijians regarding the rising cost of living and the timing of the proposed tariff increase. As discussions continue, it remains crucial for stakeholders to consider the voice of the community as these developments unfold. The current sentiment emphasizes the need for careful deliberation, showing that many residents hope for solutions that will not further strain their financial situations.
