The Fiji Elections Office (FEO) is facing a challenge with seven key positions still vacant, including the important roles of Deputy Supervisor of Elections and Legal Officer. This issue was highlighted during discussions about the FEO’s 2021-2022 Audit Report, where committee member Hem Chand expressed concerns that the absence of leadership personnel could adversely impact governance and operational efficiency within the organization.

In response to these concerns, Supervisor of Elections Ana Mataiciwa assured that measures are being taken to recruit for these positions. She noted that typically, the Deputy Supervisor is appointed during an election year to align with recruitment efforts aimed at bolstering the internal auditing process. Currently, the FEO employs a total of 63 staff members.

This situation resonates with previously reported challenges that the FEO has navigated, particularly concerning financial dealings from past elections. For instance, the office was reported to have outstanding debt owed to election officials from the 2018 general elections, which has been complicated by verification issues regarding employee data.

While challenges remain in managing efficient electoral operations, especially in light of vacancies and past financial complications, the FEO’s commitment to filling these key roles is a positive step towards enhancing governance and operational efficacy. With recent efforts to rectify outstanding payments and improve processes for upcoming elections, there is an optimistic outlook for the FEO as it works to ensure a smoother electoral experience for all stakeholders involved.

The ongoing recruitment and operational enhancements signify a proactive approach by the FEO, aiming to not only resolve existing issues but also to establish a more dependable framework for future elections, ultimately fostering public confidence in the democratic process in Fiji.
