The Supervisor of Elections, Ana Mataiciwa, has formally lodged a police complaint against Barbara Malimali, the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). The complaint was submitted on November 28 to Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew and includes serious allegations of abuse of office, intimidation, and harassment of witnesses.
Acting Commissioner Chew has confirmed the receipt of the complaint and stated that investigations are currently underway. This complaint is part of a broader inquiry by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), which is looking into Malimali’s conduct during her time as Chair of the Electoral Commission. Furthermore, Malimali’s appointment is also under review by a Commission of Inquiry, adding to the scrutiny surrounding her position.
As the situation develops, it is essential to ensure transparency and accountability within public office, which is vital for maintaining public trust in government institutions. The ongoing investigations could lead to significant changes in governance standards and practices in Fiji, promoting a culture of integrity.
This unfolding story highlights the importance of addressing allegations of misconduct within public offices. It serves as a reminder that accountability mechanisms are crucial for the upholding of democracy and the rule of law.
