The Ministry of Education in Fiji is set to reintroduce interviews for Year 13 students intending to enroll in teacher training programs across the country. This initiative will be executed in partnership with several organizations, including Teacher Training Institutions (TTIs), the Fiji Teacher’s Registration Authority (FTRA), the Higher Education Commission Fiji (HECF), and the Tertiary Scholarships and Loans Service (TSLS).

Education Minister Aseri Radrodro expressed enthusiasm about this opportunity for Year 13 graduates who aspire to enter the teaching profession, emphasizing the crucial role they will play in shaping the future educational landscape in Fiji. He stated that the demand for qualified teachers is growing, necessitating rigorous and tailored training programs to attract suitable candidates.

This initiative comes as part of the 2024-2033 Denarau Declaration, which aims to strengthen partnerships between TTIs and various educational stakeholders, ensuring that graduates are well-equipped with the essential knowledge and skills for classroom success. Radrodro highlighted the importance of recruiting passionate individuals and cultivating a dedicated new generation of educators who can significantly impact students’ lives.

The Minister outlined a shortage in key teaching areas, including:

– Primary Education
– Special & Inclusive Education
– Biology and Chemistry
– Mathematics and Physics
– Computer Science and Office Technology
– Physical Education, Music, and Art & Craft
– Industrial Arts

The closing date for online applications to TSLS is January 31, 2025. The scholarship programs available for merit-based higher education include courses in both Primary and Secondary Education, early childhood education, as well as various specialties such as Special and Inclusive Education and Computer Science.

The Ministry, in collaboration with TTIs, plans to conduct two rounds of interviews. Eligible students will be informed of the interview dates and venues via email and phone calls.

This initiative reflects a positive step towards enhancing the quality of education in Fiji by fostering a robust teaching workforce. By focusing on passionate candidates, the Ministry aims to inspire future generations of learners and ensure a brighter educational future for all.
