Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro recently held a significant meeting with Hamish Young, the newly appointed UNICEF Representative for the Pacific, to enhance collaboration on Fiji’s education reforms. Accompanied by UNICEF Deputy Representative Roshni Basu and Education Officers Semiti Temo and Aisling Falconer, Young’s visit centered around pivotal reform priorities for the Fijian education sector.

During their discussions, the participants addressed crucial topics such as the new Education Act, ongoing curriculum reviews aimed at equipping students with necessary skills for the future, and initiatives for teacher retention. The meeting also emphasized the development of climate-resilient schools, a critical factor in ensuring the sustainability of education in the face of environmental challenges.

Another important aspect of the dialogue was the role of rugby and school sports in fostering youth engagement and promoting gender equality. This reflects a broader commitment to not only enhance academic achievement but also to cultivate well-rounded individuals.

UNICEF reaffirmed its dedication to supporting Fiji’s education sector by providing assistance in various areas, including curriculum development, improving school safety, bolstering professional development programs, and tackling the challenges related to teacher retention.

The Ministry of Education reiterated its commitment to providing inclusive and high-quality education for all Fijian students. By continuing to collaborate with development partners, the ministry aims to advance sustainable and resilient education systems throughout the country, setting a positive trajectory for the future of education in Fiji.
