The Ministry of Education is set to reevaluate the recruitment policy for students entering Year 9 in 2025, as announced by Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro. This review is part of the government’s broader assessment of the no-repeat policy, which has been identified as a contributing factor to the lack of monitoring for students who struggle with external examinations, particularly the Fiji Year Eight Examination.
Last year, approximately 19,396 students took the Year Eight Examination, achieving a pass rate of 69 percent, leaving around 6,012 students without a passing grade. Minister Radrodro stated that changes are necessary to ensure that all students transitioning from Year 8 to Year 9 are properly supported and monitored.
Parents or guardians encountering challenges when enrolling their children in Year 9 are encouraged to reach out to local district offices for assistance. The Minister also acknowledged the need to cater to students who have not passed, emphasizing plans to reintegrate vocational education and training options at lower levels, specifically from Year 8 or Year 9.
Overall, this initiative reflects a concerted effort by the Ministry of Education to enhance educational outcomes and provide meaningful pathways for all students, regardless of their academic performance. By addressing the deficiencies in the current system, the government aims to ensure that every student has the opportunity to succeed in their educational journey.
This review not only presents a chance for a qualitative change in education but also encourages a more inclusive approach to student learning and development across Fiji.
