The Fiji Seismology Unit has issued its Earthquake Summary for December 2025, revealing that a total of 435 earthquakes were documented in the region, with only two events felt by residents. The magnitude of these earthquakes varied from 1.1 to as high as 5.7.

Notably, on December 9, a magnitude 4.4 earthquake was felt in the Yasawas and parts of the Western Division, including Lautoka. Subsequently, on December 19, a stronger magnitude 5.7 quake was reported, which was experienced in Vanua Levu and nearby islands. This significant event was accompanied by numerous aftershocks, the strongest of which registered at a magnitude of 4.4.

In its overview, the Seismology Unit noted a noticeable concentration of shallow seismic activity in northern Fiji, particularly around Vanua Levu, extending from the northern Yasawas to Cikobia Island along the Fiji Fracture Zone. The report attributes this level of activity to the natural dynamics of the fault zone in the region.

Additionally, deep seismic activities were observed at depths ranging from 300 to 600 kilometers, primarily east of Fiji beneath the Lau Basin. This reflects ongoing subduction-related movements as the Pacific Plate shifts beneath the Indo-Australian Plate. Minor shallow seismic activities were also detected around Kadavu Island, southeast Viti Levu, and areas in Vanua Levu, particularly near Savusavu Bay.

On December 7, a short-lived earthquake swarm occurred near Naigani Island in Tailevu Province, the most significant event measuring a magnitude of 2.5, although no felt reports were received from this swarm.

The Seismology Unit emphasized that the level of seismic activity recorded is typical for Fiji, which lies along active tectonic boundaries. They encouraged residents to stay informed and prepared through official channels, reassuring the public that such occurrences are part of the region’s geological characteristics. This proactive approach reflects a commitment to public safety and awareness in the face of natural events.
