Minister for Policing Iowane Naivalurua has firmly refuted allegations that Fiji has succumbed to the fight against illicit drugs, urging stakeholders not to be swayed by negativity and what he termed as “armchair strategies.” Speaking at the National Talanoa Session on Responding to Illicit Drugs in Fiji, Mr. Naivalurua emphasized the importance of staying focused on future efforts.
He remarked, “Let us not be distracted by the distractors out there,” addressing the pessimistic voices he claimed are detached from the realities on the ground. The Minister criticized statements suggesting Fiji had already lost the drug war, asserting that such claims undermine the ongoing efforts and momentum in combating drug-related issues.
Acknowledging the challenges Fiji has faced, Mr. Naivalurua affirmed, “Yes, we may have lost a few small battles here and there. But we now have a new momentum. We are focusing on a new direction. Fiji has not lost the drug war.” He firmly rejected comparisons with major drug-producing nations like Mexico and Colombia, stating, “We are not Mexico, we are not Colombia, nor any of the small islands in the Caribbean.”
He urged the audience to remain resilient against negative commentary that could undermine the energy and enthusiasm of those working to combat drug problems. “We cannot afford to let these kinds of commentaries chew up your energy,” he said, emphasizing the need for action, unity, and tangible results in the fight against illicit drugs.
The talanoa session gathered government agencies, community leaders, and partners, aiming to bolster coordination and sustain national efforts against the escalating threat of illicit drugs. This renewed commitment reflects hope and a proactive stance towards a safer environment in Fiji.
