A businessman from Labasa, Satish Kumar, has voiced concerns about the limited capabilities of the police in addressing drug-related issues in Fiji, emphasizing the necessity for increased community engagement. He insists that the fight against drug trafficking is a collective responsibility, stating that the public’s collaboration with law enforcement is essential for meaningful progress.

Kumar highlighted the alarming presence of commercial drug dealers infiltrating local communities and stressed that those involved in trafficking should face severe penalties. However, he distinguishes between traffickers and drug users, advocating for a compassionate approach towards those struggling with addiction. “They need rehabilitation, not just jail,” he noted, underlining the importance of treatment over punishment.

In addition to the call for rehabilitation facilities aimed at educating and reforming drug users, Kumar urged the government to enhance drug awareness programs in schools, advocating for educational campaigns starting from kindergarten through secondary education. “Education and awareness must start at home and continue in schools. Students are already using and selling drugs in some schools,” he warned.

Kumar also called for advancements in police resources, urging for modern intelligence systems and better-equipped officers to combat drug trafficking effectively. He emphasized the necessity for confidential informers to feel secure, as fear of repercussions often hampers the reporting of drug-related crimes. Furthermore, he advocated for legal reforms to empower police while ensuring accountability.

Correspondingly, Inspector Jemesa Lave, a consultant for the Narcotics Bill, confirmed that the government is currently reviewing rehabilitation services, including private and faith-based organizations, with the goal of standardizing and enhancing these services. This initiative illustrates a hopeful move towards addressing the drug crisis in Fiji, fostering a more comprehensive approach to rehabilitation and prevention.
