The impressive performance of Flying Fijians fullback Vuate Karawalevu, particularly his strong defensive plays and effective kicking in the recent victory over Samoa, has drawn attention.
Glen Jackson, the head coach of Fijian Drua, mentioned that there is a possibility of Dravuwalu, a player from Kadavu, joining the team next season. Karawalevu, who previously captained Marist Brothers High School rugby and won a gold medal in the 400 meters at the Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics, has shown great potential.
Jackson affirmed that Vuate would enhance their backline with his skills. At 23, Karawalevu previously played for the Kaiviti Silktails in 2021 and represented Fiji Bati in the 2021 Rugby World Cup. He is currently contracted with the Waratahs for two seasons.
Jackson highlighted the achievement of having 14 Drua players contributing to the Flying Fijians’ 42-16 win against Samoa during their Pacific Nations Cup match on August 23 at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. He also announced that the Drua team will have a pre-season camp in Kadavu, along with plans for renovations at their training base to create an environment conducive to developing world-class athletes.
The return of Joseva Tamani, who can play both in the back row and at lock, is seen as a beneficial addition to the club’s roster. Recent signings Peni Ravai and Inia Tabuavou are also expected to make significant contributions. Jackson praised Peni for bringing valuable experience and mentorship, particularly to the front row, while noting that the new center combination features Iosefo Masi paired with Tabuavou, who recently showcased his skills in a test match against Samoa.
Furthermore, Baden Stephenson, the new interim general manager of Fijian Drua, revealed plans for a 10s tournament scheduled for December 13 this year, aimed at being an international event involving Skipper teams.
