A tribunal established under Fiji’s Constitution has fully exonerated Christopher Pryde, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), from accusations of misconduct, determining there are no valid grounds for his dismissal. The tribunal was chaired by Justice Anare Tuilevuka, alongside Justices Chaitanya Lakshman and Samuela Qica, and presented its findings to President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu on December 23, 2024. Following a thorough review and consultations with relevant authorities, the President endorsed the tribunal’s unanimous decision.

In their key findings, the tribunal identified a lack of evidence to support the allegations against Mr. Pryde. Significantly, the report clarified the ambiguous term “misbehaviour,” which had not been defined within Fiji’s Constitution, setting a crucial legal precedent. Moreover, the tribunal recommended that the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) develop clear policies and frameworks for addressing complaints raised against judicial and quasi-judicial authorities. This move aims to foster consistency, transparency, and accountability in the handling of such cases.

As Mr. Pryde resumes his responsibilities, several measures will be implemented: his original 2019 Agreement of Service with the government will be reinstated, any unpaid salaries and benefits will be promptly compensated, and he will report to the Chairperson of the JSC to ensure a smooth transition back to his role and the return of official equipment.

The President commended the tribunal members for their professionalism, recognizing their vital contribution to the legal framework in Fiji. The complete report from the tribunal is now accessible to the public, promoting transparency in the judicial process.

This outcome not only reinforces the integrity of the judicial system in Fiji but also highlights the importance of having clear regulations concerning judicial conduct. The successful resolution of this matter reflects positively on the legal frameworks that safeguard against unfounded allegations, ultimately promoting a more robust system of governance.

In summary, the tribunal’s unanimous decision affirms Mr. Pryde’s position and serves as a reminder of the judicial system’s resilience—ensuring that due process is observed while upholding professional standards within judicial bodies.
