Fiji concluded its participation in the HSBC Cape Town Sevens tournament by securing third place, decisively defeating Spain with a score of 47-10 in the bronze medal match. Coached by Osea Kolinisau, Fiji narrowly missed a chance to compete for the gold medal, having lost a close semi-final to France, 19-17.

Determined to end their campaign with a win, the Fijian team was relentless, scoring seven tries throughout the match while also taking advantage of Spain’s unforced errors. Players who contributed to the scoring included Joji Nasova, Filipe Sauturaga, Jeremaia Matana, George Bose, Terio Veilawa, Kavekini Tanivanuakula, and Vuiviwa Naduvalo, with each player registering a try. In terms of conversions, Nasova and Teba each contributed one, while Sauturaga and Veilawa each added two successful conversions to their tally.

Spain managed to score two tries in the first half, both by Jeremy Trevithick, but it was not enough to keep pace with the powerful Fijian side.

Overall, Fiji showcased their skill and determination, reflecting the readiness of the team to compete at an elite level despite the heart-wrenching loss in the semi-finals. This victory in the bronze medal playoff reinforces Fiji’s reputation in the rugby sevens arena and provides a solid foundation for future competitions. The team can take pride in their performance and look ahead with optimism.
