Fiji achieved a significant victory in the 2024 Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Prime Ministers Cup, defeating the Solomon Islands Development team 3-0 in Honiara. This win marks Fiji’s first in the tournament after having earlier drawn with Vanuatu and Papau New Guinea, both games ending in 1-1 ties.

The performance of the team, coached by Marika Rodu, notably improved in the second half after a quiet first half. Setareki Hughes ignited the scoring for Fiji with an impressive free-kick in the 71st minute. Soon after, Ba youngster Penisoni Tirau, making his senior international debut as a substitute, scored just a minute after coming onto the field, catching the opposition off guard. Nabil Begg, also a substitute, sealed the deal with Fiji’s third goal in the 86th minute.

With this win, Fiji has accumulated five points from three matches and is gearing up for its final match against the Solomon Islands on Saturday.

This victory serves as a strong indicator of Fiji’s growing prowess in regional football, and the team’s continued development is something to watch for in the upcoming matches. The thrilling performance shown by the younger players bodes well for the future of Fijian football, bringing hope for further successes in the tournament and beyond.
