Fiji Dominates Samoa with Salawa’s Hat-Trick in Pacific Nations Cup Opener

Kitione Salawa, playing as an openside flanker, scored three tries as the FIJI Water Flying Fijians claimed a 42-16 victory over Samoa in the opening match of the 2024 Pacific Nations Cup held in Suva.

Fiji initially took the lead early in the match, with Salawa scoring within the first four minutes after a strong play from Number 8 Elia Canakaivata, although the conversion attempt by Caleb Muntz was unsuccessful. Samoa responded in the 14th minute with a penalty from fly-half D’Angelo Leuila.

Samoa took its first lead just a few minutes later when winger Pisi Leilua crossed the line following a well-executed play facilitated by halfback Melani Matavao, with Leuila successfully converting. The Samoan team extended their lead to 13-5 with another penalty from Leuila in the 27th minute.

Fiji’s Iosefo Masi, an Olympic silver medalist, showcased remarkable strength to break through the Samoan defense, scoring Fiji’s second try shortly after. Muntz converted the try, narrowing the gap. However, a yellow card issued to Temo Mayanavanua in the 33rd minute resulted in another penalty for Samoa, allowing them to maintain a slight lead going into halftime, where Fiji trailed 16-15.

In the second half, Fiji surged ahead, dominating the game without allowing Samoa to score. Salawa added two more tries, while Frank Lomani and debutant fullback Vuate Karawalevu each contributed to the scoreline. Muntz also secured another penalty and converted three tries, leading to a comprehensive victory for Fiji with a final score of 42-16.
