The Fiji Water Flying Fijians showcased an impressive second-half performance, overcoming Japan with a score of 41-17 to secure their sixth consecutive Pacific Nations Cup title.
Sevens star Ponipate Loganimasi had a remarkable debut, making two line breaks and scoring two tries in just 24 minutes of play. Caleb Muntz, who was awarded Player of the Tournament, played a crucial role in the match with his flawless kicking and effective game management.
The match began with Seungsin Lee and Muntz exchanging early penalties until Japan’s Dylan Riley electrified the crowd in the 20th minute. After breaking through several tackles, Riley chipped the ball over the defender and won the race to score. Lee successfully converted, igniting hopes for a dominant Japanese period, but Fiji quickly shifted momentum.
Fiji initially thought they had scored in the 31st minute when Inia Tabuavou crossed the line, only for the TMO to rule it out due to a knock-on. However, they responded just a minute later when Tabuavou’s kick-forward set up Vuate Karawalevu to score. Muntz’s conversion leveled the match.
The first half ended with the scores tied, but Japan was down a player after hooker Mamoru Harada received a yellow card. They held their ground during his absence, although Fiji had a try disallowed due to obstruction.
In the second half, Muntz extended Fiji’s lead with another penalty, and a well-coordinated team play enabled Loganimasi to score in the corner, further showcasing Fiji’s offensive prowess. Muntz converted, giving Fiji a 10-point cushion, and soon made a brilliant 50/22 kick that set up another scoring opportunity.
Tuisue scored from close range, and flanker Kitione Salawa’s outrageous offload allowed Karawalevu to add another try. Loganimasi capped off his outstanding debut with a final try, dodging a tackle from full-back Lee. Japan managed a consolation try from Malo Tuitama late in the game, but it was not enough to overshadow Fiji’s victory.
