The Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC) is witnessing a significant surge in demand for its services, with over 2,000 women, girls, and children seeking assistance in just the first part of this year. Coordinator Shamima Ali reports that the Centre typically supports nearly 3,000 survivors annually, and given current trends, this year’s figures are expected to reflect a similar pattern.

Ali emphasizes that this alarming statistic underscores the persistent and growing impact of domestic violence in Fiji. The FWCC offers vital services including counseling, crisis intervention, and emergency support, aimed at providing relief to survivors. “We also engage in extensive advocacy efforts due to the challenges we face with service providers not responding effectively to women, children, and girls reporting such violence,” she noted.

The Centre is committed to developing long-term solutions to break the cycle of abuse and prevent further harm. Ali highlights the need for continuous support, stating, “Counseling services must be available for as long as a survivor needs help, focusing on their empowerment. Ultimately, we want to help them reach a point where they feel they can stand on their own.”

FWCC Counsellor Supervisor Elina Cagilaba further explains that domestic violence often begins with verbal abuse, which can escalate into more serious forms of manipulation and threats. “Such actions do not always manifest as physical abuse but can instill fear and apprehension in survivors,” she pointed out.

Cagilaba stresses the importance of collaboration among government agencies, stakeholders, and the wider community to effectively combat and prevent domestic violence. The FWCC’s commitment to advocacy and support shines a light on the urgent need for collective action to address this critical issue, underscoring the hope that community involvement and enhanced services can lead to safer environments for all.
