Fiji Doctors Oppose Draft Bill Limiting Medical Certificates to Approved Practitioners

The Fiji Medical Association (FMA) has voiced strong opposition to a proposal in the draft Employment Relations Bill that would limit workers’ options for obtaining medical certificates exclusively to a defined list of “approved doctors.” FMA President Dr. Alipate Vakamocea has expressed serious concerns that such a restriction would compromise the integrity and independence of the medical profession while significantly hindering access to healthcare for workers, especially those in rural areas.

Dr. Vakamocea emphasized that existing accountability mechanisms under the Medical and Dental Practitioners Act 2010 and the Fiji Medical Council effectively address instances of fraudulent medical certificates. Rather than implementing new limitations, he urged Parliament to enhance current processes that ensure transparency and trust in the healthcare system.

In the context of Fiji’s healthcare landscape, the FMA has previously raised alarms regarding the employment of underqualified medical professionals in private hospitals. Dr. Vakamocea noted that this trend undermines patient safety and poses risks to healthcare standards. He has continually called for adherence to established regulations, emphasizing the importance of qualified practitioners in maintaining public confidence in healthcare services.

These challenges have arisen amid a growing shortage of senior specialist doctors, exacerbated by the resignation of over 280 medical officers in recent years. The government’s acknowledgment of these trends and efforts to improve working conditions for healthcare professionals reflect a shared desire among stakeholders to strengthen the nation’s healthcare system.

Hope exists that through constructive dialogue and commitment to upholding high standards of medical ethics and professionalism, the future of healthcare in Fiji can be improved. As the FMA remains engaged in advocating for evidence-based solutions, there is a collective aspiration to ensure fair access to healthcare for all Fijians, enhancing healthcare standards and patient outcomes throughout the nation.
