Fiji Diwali: Leaders Urge Ramayana Values for a Brighter Future

Fiji Labour Party leader and former Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry has called on Fijians to draw inspiration from the Hindu epic Ramayan as they navigate through challenging times. In his recent Diwali message, he emphasized the high moral principles illustrated in the epic, urging citizens to reflect on these values as they celebrate the festival of lights.

Chaudhry spoke of Diwali as a time when homes are illuminated with diyas and sparkle with fairy lights, symbolizing hope and resilience. He pointed out that despite the current bleak circumstances in Fiji, Diwali serves as a reminder that there is the potential for a brighter future. “No matter how gloomy the circumstances may be, Diwali brings with it fresh hopes for a better and more promising year ahead,” he stated.

Drawing from the rich traditions of the festival, he discussed its deep-rooted connections to the story of Lord Rama, which encapsulates the ultimate victory of good over evil. According to Chaudhry, the Ramayan’s significant lessons extend beyond that of heroism, touching on critical aspects of human integrity and the importance of adhering to principles despite facing adversity. He urged parents and the community to embrace these values during the celebrations.

Chaudhry’s timely message echoed that of Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Professor Biman Prasad, who also highlighted the values of truth, justice, and righteousness during Diwali. Prasad emphasized the need for citizens to cherish the freedoms regained since the Coalition Government’s election in December 2022, likening their journey to Lord Rama’s return to Ayodhya. His remarks reflect a shared sentiment among Fiji’s leadership, calling for a commitment to unite around the principles that are essential for achieving a prosperous society.

As Fiji continues to recover and push for progress, the lessons encapsulated in these celebrations are crucial. Both leaders underscore the notion that, grounded in unity and integrity, Fijians can shape a hopeful future, fostering an environment of dialogue and collaboration. The spirit of Diwali is indeed a beacon guiding the way forward, reminding everyone of the enduring power of light to overcome darkness.
