As Fijians get ready to celebrate the Festival of Lights, Diwali, the National Fire Authority (NFA) is reminding citizens to prioritize safety, responsibility, and joy during the festivities. NFA Chief Executive Officer Puamau Sowane emphasized that while Diwali is a time for happiness and unity, it should not be marred by avoidable tragedies. He urged families to keep a close watch when handling candles, diyas, cooking appliances, and fireworks.
“Let us ensure that this Diwali is remembered for joy and unity, not preventable tragedies,” Mr. Sowane stated. He encouraged everyone to celebrate responsibly, stay vigilant, and to contact emergency services by calling 910 if any incidents occur.
The authority’s records indicate a concerning trend, as numerous fire incidents are reported each year during Diwali. These are often attributed to unattended cooking, open flames, and unsafe handling of fireworks, which can lead to severe property damage, injuries, or even loss of life.
To prevent these incidents, Mr. Sowane highlighted essential safety measures, such as placing diyas and candles on stable, heat-resistant surfaces, ensuring they are kept away from flammable materials, and never leaving cooking unattended. He also stressed the importance of extinguishing all flames before leaving home or going to sleep.
Regarding fireworks, the NFA urged the public to purchase these only from licensed vendors, read safety instructions carefully, and use them in open areas, far from homes and dry vegetation. Additionally, the NFA has committed to ongoing awareness programs throughout the year aimed at promoting fire safety.
With the festive season approaching, it is crucial for individuals to remain proactive about fire safety. By taking these precautions, families can fully enjoy the celebrations without the shadow of accidents.
