Fiji Deputy PM Resigns Amid FICAC Charges

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad has officially resigned from his ministerial duties in light of charges brought against him by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). In a statement released today, Prasad expressed his decision to step aside after a morning meeting with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.

Confirming the resignation, Prasad noted that he feels it is imperative to step down given the circumstances following the charge served to him yesterday. He stated, “I have accordingly resigned my office as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics.” Prasad plans to address these legal matters “in the shortest possible time and in accordance with proper legal process,” and emphasized that his attorneys are managing the situation expediently.

Prasad acknowledged the support he has received from the Prime Minister and his parliamentary colleagues, appreciating their solidarity during this challenging time. He described political life as one that comes with numerous challenges, stating, “This is just one more of those challenges to be dealt with calmly, patiently, and as swiftly as possible.” He reaffirmed his commitment to public service and indicated he would continue to participate in Parliament as a backbencher, vowing to serve the people to the best of his abilities.

This incident comes on the heels of earlier investigations by FICAC concerning Prasad’s asset declarations under the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Act, where similar allegations appeared but were not pursued due to a lack of grievances over the past decade. Opposition parties, particularly the Fiji Labour Party, have called for transparency among government officials, heightening public demands for accountability.

As this situation unfolds, it may serve as a catalyst for dialogue about integrity and ethical conduct within Fiji’s political landscape, offering an opportunity for potential reforms that could enhance public governance.
