Fiji Deputy PM Prasad Faces Corruption Charges Over Asset Declarations

Professor Biman Prasad, the leader of the National Federation Party and Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister, has declared his intention to address the corruption charges against him swiftly. He stated that his legal team is managing the situation efficiently. Following a charge from the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), Prasad decided to resign from his position to focus on his legal matters, confirming this development in a conversation with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.

In his announcement, Prasad expressed gratitude for the support he has received from the public and his party colleagues, emphasizing the importance of calm and patience during this challenging time. He affirmed his dedication to public service, promising to continue serving on the back benches of Parliament, upholding the values of commitment and sacrifice in politics.

The charges against Prasad are linked to a review by FICAC concerning complaints dating back to 2015, centered around statutory disclosure rules and allegations of providing false information under the Political Parties Act. Acting FICAC Commissioner Lavi Rokoika explained that while the complaint had previously not resulted in prosecution due to a lack of grievances, the current review of the case highlighted persistent concerns about the integrity of asset declarations made by Prasad while he was the leader of his party.

Rokoika addressed worries about potential information leaks prior to the charges being served, stating that any speculations in the public domain before the formal filing were not based on factual disclosures from within the commission.

Despite the serious nature of these allegations, the circumstances also present an opportunity for enhanced discussions regarding integrity and ethical practices in Fiji’s political landscape. Calls for accountability have intensified, particularly from opposition parties, urging greater transparency among government officials.

As Prasad prepares to defend himself against these charges, which include failing to comply with asset disclosure regulations, the political climate in Fiji remains under close scrutiny with hopes for potential reforms that could enhance public governance and trust in political institutions.
