Fiji has significantly enhanced its border protection capabilities with the recent addition of four new X-Ray machines at Nadi International Airport. This initiative, undertaken by the Ministry of Agriculture in collaboration with the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji, marks a critical step in safeguarding the nation against biosecurity risks and illegal trade.

Minister Tomasi Tunabuna emphasized that this investment underscores the government’s commitment to protecting Fiji from various border threats. He noted that the new machines will play a vital role in detecting and preventing the entry of harmful pests, diseases, and prohibited items, thereby bolstering the country’s biosecurity measures.

Furthermore, Tunabuna pointed out that these advanced machines will not only enhance biosecurity efforts but also contribute to national security by improving the identification of risks related to drug trafficking and illegal trade. The machines are designed to provide faster, more accurate, and non-intrusive screening processes, ultimately improving both detection efficiency and passenger clearance at Nadi and Nausori International Airports.

Surend Pratap, Acting Chief Executive of the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji, acknowledged the importance of collaborative efforts among various agencies, including the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS), Fiji Airports, and the Fiji Police Force, in reinforcing border security. The strategic deployment of these four machines across Nadi and Nausori International Airports aims to enhance baggage screening and facilitate the early detection of potential biosecurity threats, marking a proactive approach to safeguarding Fiji’s borders.
