Fiji recently participated in the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) 2025 and the 15th General Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), where the country underscored the urgent need for enhanced access to financing for renewable energy projects. The Minister for Public Works and Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, represented Fiji during this key event, held from January 13 to 16, 2025.

Minister Tuisawau specifically called for increased funding to support solar energy initiatives and solar water pump projects in rural areas, including schools and health centers. This emphasis on solar projects aligns with Fiji’s broader commitment to transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources, with a goal of generating more than 90% of its electricity from renewables by 2030 and seeking net-zero emissions by 2050. Currently, about 55% of the country’s electricity is derived from renewable sources, primarily hydropower.

The Minister highlighted the critical challenges Pacific Small Island Developing States (SIDS), like Fiji, face due to climate change, such as rising sea levels and the rising frequency of extreme weather events, including cyclones and floods. During a significant bilateral meeting with Francisco La Camera, the Director General of IRENA, Tuisawau reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to support IRENA’s work in helping member countries achieve their energy transition goals.

Both leaders discussed collaboration through various financing initiatives offered by IRENA, such as the Energy Transition Accelerator Financing (ETAF), the Climate Investment Platform (CIP), and the Small Island Developing States Lighthouses Initiative. These partnerships aim to bolster renewable energy developments in Fiji, particularly in rural communities, reinforcing the nation’s strategy for sustainable energy access.

In a world grappling with the effects of climate change, Fiji’s proactive measures and participation in international forums reflect a hopeful narrative for small island nations. By positioning itself as a leader in renewable energy initiatives and advocating for needed funding, Fiji not only aims to secure its own sustainable future but also inspires similar commitments from other nations.

Fiji’s engagement at these global platforms showcases the importance of international cooperation in addressing climate challenges, and the potential for innovative energy solutions that can benefit both local communities and the planet as a whole.
