Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance of Fiji, Biman Prasad, emphasized the need for substantial climate finance strategies rather than merely relying on small-scale initiatives during his address at the 6th High Level Ministerial Dialogue on Climate Finance at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. He called on the international community to transition from pilot projects to transformative financing aimed at effectively addressing the challenges posed by climate change.

Prasad pointed out that for Fiji and other Small Island Developing States, fragmented efforts cannot adequately tackle the severity of climate change. He expressed hope that participants would leave the conference with a strong commitment to the New Collective Quantifying Goal (NCQG), which would be instrumental in driving the global economy toward decarbonization and transformative adaptation.

Furthermore, he highlighted that achieving the 1.5°C temperature target set by the Paris Agreement is only feasible through strategic investments and supportive policies. This approach will be crucial for both economic viability and scientific effectiveness in combating climate change.

In summary, Fiji is advocating for significant collective action in climate financing, particularly for vulnerable nations. If followed through, this shift could lead to meaningful progress and stronger, more resilient global strategies in the fight against climate change.

This optimistic call to action underscores the importance of enhanced collaboration and robust financial mechanisms to ensure a sustainable and equitable future for all, particularly for those on the front lines of climate impact.
