The Minister for Commerce and Business Development, Esrom Immanuel, has expressed his support for the Fiji Commerce and Competition Commission’s (FCCC) recent decision to delay the rollout of planned electricity tariffs, opting instead for a 21-day public consultation period. He referred to this move as “a post-Christmas and pre-New Year announcement gift to be heard for all Fijians,” highlighting the government’s commitment to engaging with the public.

Immanuel emphasized the importance of ensuring that everyday households, micro and small enterprises, as well as the broader business sector, have a significant voice in decisions impacting costs of living and business operations. He encouraged all Fijians to actively participate in this dialogue, stating, “The FCCC’s decision to engage in a 21-day consultation reflects the value of listening to the voices of the people.” He further urged the public, businesses, and MSMEs to share their views and contribute constructively to discussions about electricity tariffs.

Recognizing the critical nature of energy costs, Immanuel reaffirmed the government’s dedication to making electricity affordable and accessible while promoting sustainable energy development and supporting a stable economy. He stated, “Public participation is central to good governance” and called this consultation period a valuable opportunity for Fijians from all backgrounds to provide input, raise concerns, and suggest ideas.

Members of the public are encouraged to visit the FCCC website or contact their local FCCC office for details on participation. The Ministry of Commerce and Business Development is prepared to support the FCCC throughout this consultation process and urges all stakeholders to engage actively during the 21-day window. By fostering collaboration between regulators, the public, and businesses, the government aims to facilitate informed decision-making that benefits the entire nation.
