Fiji Day Festivities Bring Unity and Joy to Suva Market

On Fiji Day, market vendors in Suva donned blue attire to celebrate the country’s 54th independence anniversary. Tourists arriving at the Suva Port via cruise ships joined the festivities, engaging in dances and enjoying various entertainment offerings.

During the event, Suva City Council chair Tevita Boseiwaqa highlighted the collaborative efforts between the council and stakeholders, aimed at achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and ensuring inclusivity for all Fijians. “We want to promote collaboration, and we are working towards that because independence to us means unity,” Mr. Boseiwaqa stated. He emphasized the importance of hosting the celebration at the Suva Market to involve the grassroots community.

Ilisapeci Viriki, general secretary of the Suva United Market Vendor Association, expressed gratitude to the Suva City Council for funding the event. She noted that despite the last-minute planning, collaboration with council staff made it possible to successfully set up decorations and live entertainment.

The main Fiji Day celebrations are scheduled for tomorrow at Subrail Park in Labasa, where President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere will officiate the ceremony.
