Fiji Day Festivities: A Unifying Celebration in Geneva

A delegation from the Fijian Parliament, headed by Speaker Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, participated in Fiji Day celebrations held at the Fiji House last night.

The event was attended by members of the Fijian community in Geneva, including several Fijian rugby players and their families who traveled from France.

The Speaker expressed appreciation to Luke Daunivalu, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Fiji to Switzerland and the Permanent Representative of Fiji to the United Nations Office and other International Organisations in Geneva, for organizing the gathering that brought Fijian families and friends together to honor this significant occasion.

Minister for Fisheries and Forests Alitia Bainivalu, who was also part of the delegation, shared a message encouraging the diaspora to work towards a united and progressive Fiji, where individuals can coexist peacefully, putting aside differences.

She mentioned, “Recently in Parliament, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Bill 2024 was introduced by the Prime Minister and is currently in its first reading. The government will determine the timing for the subsequent readings before it is enacted.”

For those gathered to celebrate Fiji Day, her message underscored the importance of nurturing existing relationships and repairing those that have been damaged.

A ‘talanoa’ session took place with the diaspora before the ceremonial cutting of the Fiji Day cake.

The delegation is in Geneva for the 149th Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly, which commenced with registrations yesterday. The Speaker is scheduled to deliver his address later this week, while Leader of the Opposition Inia Seruiratu will chair the meeting of the Small Islands Developing States set for Monday on the margins of the Assembly.
