In celebration of Fiji Day, market vendors in Suva donned blue attire to mark the nation’s 54th independence anniversary. Tourists arriving at the Suva Port via cruise ship joined in the festivities, participating in dances and enjoying various entertainment offerings.
During the event, Suva City Council chair Tevita Boseiwaqa emphasized the council’s collaboration with stakeholders to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ensuring that no Fijian is left behind. “We aim to promote collaboration, as independence to us signifies unity,” Mr. Boseiwaqa stated, highlighting the choice to hold the event at the Suva Market to engage with grassroots communities.
Ilisapeci Viriki, general secretary of the Suva United Market Vendor Association, expressed gratitude to the council for funding the event. She noted, “This was organized at the last minute, but with the support of the council workers, we managed to put together the decorations and live entertainment.”
The main celebrations for Fiji Day are scheduled for tomorrow at Labasa’s Subrail Park, where President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere will serve as the officiant.
