Fiji Day Celebrations Unite Diaspora in Geneva

A delegation from the Fijian Parliament, led by Speaker Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, participated in Fiji Day celebrations at the Fiji House in Geneva last night.

The event was attended by members of the Fijian community living in Geneva, including several Fijian rugby players and their families who traveled from France.

The Speaker expressed gratitude to Luke Daunivalu, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Fiji to Switzerland and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva, for organizing the event that brought Fijian families and friends together to celebrate this important occasion.

During the celebrations, Minister for Fisheries and Forests Alitia Bainivalu, who was also part of the delegation, spoke about the importance of unity and peace among Fijians. She reminded attendees that now is the time to work towards a united and progressive Fiji, setting aside differences.

Bainivalu highlighted the recent introduction of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Bill 2024 in Parliament by the Prime Minister, noting that the government will determine its progress through subsequent readings.

She urged those present to focus on strengthening existing relationships while healing any divisions.

Additionally, a ‘talanoa’ session took place with the diaspora prior to the cutting of the Fiji Day cake.

The delegation is in Geneva for the 149th Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly, which commenced with registration events yesterday. The Speaker is scheduled to deliver a speech later this week, while the Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, will chair a meeting focused on Small Islands Developing States on Monday alongside the Assembly.
