Fiji Day Celebration Sparks Debate Over Inclusivity

Opposition member Parveen Bala criticized the recent Fiji Day celebration for not being inclusive of all members of society. He highlighted that the event overlooked other divisional celebrations and failed to include students from special schools and senior citizens.

Bala pointed out that in previous years, special efforts were made to incorporate these groups, promoting themes of inclusion, harmony, and progress for all Fijians. Normally, special schools would be acknowledged with gift packs during the celebrations, which he believes helped foster national confidence and unity. This year’s Fiji Day, in his view, did not seize the opportunity to strengthen these ideals.

He emphasized that the celebration should serve as a means to reinforce the nation’s unity and to showcase the progress made as a country, which previous governments managed effectively by engaging all sectors of society.
