Fiji’s Customs service is set to undergo a significant enhancement with the introduction of advanced scanning technology and artificial intelligence. Udit Singh, the CEO of the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS), highlighted that these innovations will bolster efficiency at the nation’s borders, addressing the growing volume of trade.
Singh emphasized the challenges posed by increased trade volume, stating, “One of the biggest issues for us is the volume of trade and matching resources to volume of trade.” By employing AI, the customs service aims to streamline various processes, including valuation methodologies, to ensure timely access to accurate information in accordance with the Customs Act.
In addition to improving efficiency, there are plans to enhance scanning operations at the airport and in remote areas of Fiji, with implementation expected in the near future. The FRCS has also reinforced its collaboration with international partners, crucial for combating the influx of illegal goods. Singh noted the importance of timely information sharing, stressing the need to integrate data from airline partners and various agencies to create a comprehensive understanding of incoming passengers and necessary actions.
This development coincides with the celebration of World Customs Day 2025, themed “Customs: Delivering on its Commitment to Efficiency, Security and Prosperity,” reflecting Fiji’s commitment to enhancing its customs operations for the safety and prosperity of the nation.
