Fiji crime down 18% in Q1, road deaths up 73%

Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has announced that Fiji has experienced a notable 18 percent decrease in overall crime rates for the first quarter of the year, spanning from August to October. At a press conference, Tudravu shared that there were 4,049 reported criminal cases during this three-month period, down from 4,960 cases in the same timeframe the previous year.

This positive trend is reflected in all divisions, including the Southern, Western, Eastern, and Central divisions, although the Northern Division saw a slight increase of 3 percent in crime rates. The reduction in serious crimes was particularly significant, with an overall decrease of 35 percent across all five divisions.

Moreover, the statistics reveal promising improvements in crimes against vulnerable groups, with offenses against women dropping by 10 percent and a substantial 34 percent decrease in crimes against children. Despite these encouraging figures, Commissioner Tudravu acknowledged ongoing concerns regarding domestic-related offenses, particularly assaults, indecent assaults, and sexual offenses.

The Fiji Police Force also reported a substantial 30 percent decline in illicit drug cases. Since the initiation of Operation Sasamaki, authorities have registered 334 drug-related cases, primarily involving unlawful possession, giving a clear indication of enhanced efforts to combat drug crimes.

While the reports overall inspire optimism, a significant concern looms with a staggering 73 percent increase in road fatalities, as the authorities had aimed for a 30 percent reduction in this area.

These latest statistics highlight the efficacy of community engagement and police initiatives in combating crime, providing a glimpse of hope for ongoing improvements in public safety in Fiji. Commissioner Tudravu is set to release a detailed breakdown of the statistics for added transparency, which is likely to further engage the community in crime prevention efforts. As the police force refines its strategies, the focus on collaboration with the public offers a promising path toward a safer and more secure environment for all residents in Fiji.
