The Fiji men’s cricket team wrapped up their campaign in the International Cricket Council Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup Sub-Regional A qualifier with a thrilling 9-run victory against the Cook Islands at the Garden Ovals in Apia on Saturday.
This win was Fiji’s third in the qualifier, highlighting their strong performance against the Cook Islands. While this result does not guarantee Fiji the top position in the qualifier, it adds excitement to the finale, as the outcome of the match between Samoa and Vanuatu will decide the qualifying team from the region. A Samoa victory will ensure their qualification, while a loss would see the Cook Islands advance.
Captain Peni Vuniwaqa was named player of the match, delivering an impressive performance with 45 runs off 28 balls and taking 2 wickets for 31 runs. Vice-Captain Peni Kotoisuva also played a key role, contributing 28 runs from 17 balls. Additionally, Joeli Moala, the team’s youngest player, excelled with 3 wickets for 21 runs, helping to limit the Cook Islands to 126 runs and securing Fiji’s win.
