Fiji Cricket Team Prepares for World Cup Glory!

Cricket Fiji’s initiatives to rejuvenate and grow the sport have received praise from President Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere, as cricket’s popularity rises in Fiji.

This morning, the 14-member Fiji Cricket team held a traditional iTatau ceremony at the State House in preparation for their qualification journey for the Men’s Cricket World Cup 2026, which will take place in Samoa.

“It is a pleasure to observe the revival of a sport that holds significant historical importance in our nation and continues to flourish,” President Katonivere expressed to the team.

“Recently, I had the honor of sending off a group of young women heading to Colombia for the Under-20 Women’s Soccer World Cup. It is, therefore, a privilege to send off this group of young men who will compete in the U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2026 qualification in Samoa,” he added.

President Katonivere highlighted the significance of young Fijians representing their country on an international platform, noting that Fiji is on the brink of becoming a formidable presence in various sports, with youth making significant contributions worldwide.

He concluded by encouraging the team to act as “exemplary ambassadors of cricket and, above all, of our nation as you represent Fiji in Samoa.”

The Fiji Men’s Cricket team is set to leave for Samoa on Thursday, August 19.
