Fiji Cracks Down: Seven Businesses Fined for Food Safety Violations

Seven businesses in Fiji have recently faced fines amounting to nearly $15,000 due to violations of food safety standards, as part of a thorough crackdown led by the Ministry of Health and Medical Services. The establishments scrutinized during this operation included retail outlets, takeaway venues, and street food vendors, with penalties ranging from $500 to $3,100 based on the severity of their infractions.

A significant case that emerged involved a retail store located in Rakiraki Town, which was issued a closure order after it demonstrated serious and persistent health violations. Inspections uncovered troubling conditions, such as meat exhibiting freezer burn and unpleasant odors, malfunctioning freezers, and inadequate cleaning practices. Additionally, health officials identified pest infestations, including weevils and cockroaches, in the store’s storage areas and on its shelves, raising major food safety concerns.

The Ministry is dedicated to upholding stringent food safety regulations and maintaining consumer protection, as emphasized by Taina Rauvala, the head of the Food Unit. She highlighted the critical need for compliance to ensure a safe environment for consumers and a fair competitive landscape for all businesses.

This crackdown reflects a consistent enforcement approach by health authorities, reminiscent of previous actions like the closure of a Nadi supermarket for similar issues. These measures underline a proactive strategy to safeguard public health and enhance consumer trust in the food service sector.
