The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has taken a firm stance against unfair trading practices as part of its pre-Easter inspection campaign. The FCCC conducted over 700 inspections across various retail outlets and businesses throughout Fiji, resulting in the identification of 53 breaches of compliance. Among the most common violations were the failure to display prices and the sale of goods above the authorized Maximum Retail Price (MRP).

FCCC Chief Executive Senikavika Jiuta reiterated the organization’s zero-tolerance policy towards unethical practices, stating, “There is no room for excuses. The law is not a suggestion, and businesses that attempt to exploit consumers will be held fully accountable.” Following these findings, the FCCC has announced plans for follow-up inspections next week to ensure that corrective measures are implemented by the violators.

In its ongoing efforts to promote fair trading, the FCCC is also reviewing its internal processes. This includes simplifying the complaint and licensing procedures to enhance efficiency for both consumers and businesses. Jiuta encouraged the public to remain vigilant and report any instances of unfair trading via their official channels, emphasizing community involvement in maintaining market integrity.

Earlier inspections conducted by the FCCC in response to consumer complaints have shown a commitment to protecting consumer rights and creating a fair trading environment. The proactive measures taken, especially during peak shopping times like Easter, not only safeguard consumer interests but also inspire trust in the marketplace.

With continuous efforts to ensure compliance and promote ethical business practices, there is an optimistic outlook for Fijian consumers as they navigate the retail landscape. The FCCC’s initiatives embody a collaborative spirit, which fosters a marketplace where fair trade flourishes and consumers can shop with confidence.
