The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji has revoked the driving licenses of eight individuals connected to fatal accidents on the roads, a move prompted by a recent tragic incident on Princes Road in Tacirua that resulted in the death of a 13-year-old student. Among those affected is a 21-year-old truck driver who held an expired Learner’s Permit at the time of the accident; his license has been cancelled for five years due to the seriousness of the situation.
LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa stated that this decision followed showcause proceedings under the Land Transport (Driver) Regulations 2000. He emphasized the importance of adhering to driving regulations, warning that flouting these rules endangers all road users.
Rokosawa highlighted ongoing discussions with the Fiji Police Force to toughen penalties for repeat traffic offenders and refine traffic regulations in accordance with the Crimes Act 2009. He noted that reckless driving can lead to severe consequences, including imprisonment for up to two years.
The LTA is taking vigorous steps to combat reckless driving, which has been linked to a troubling rise in accidents attributed to speeding and negligence. Efforts include collaboration with law enforcement to identify high-risk behaviors, along with conducting routine inspections and imposing stricter penalties for traffic violations.
The LTA is calling on all drivers to reassess their driving habits and prioritize safety, urging them to avoid reckless behaviors such as speeding and distracted driving. Rokosawa appeals for a cultural shift in attitudes towards road safety, especially as the festive season approaches, stressing that responsible driving is a communal obligation that can save lives.
Despite the concerning situation, the data indicates a slight decline in the current death toll, which stands at 61 compared to 76 during the same period last year. This suggests that collective efforts to promote road safety may be beginning to yield positive results.
In summary, the LTA’s decisive actions and commitment to enhancing road safety serve as a hopeful reminder that vigilance and respect for regulations can significantly reduce traffic incidents, paving the way for safer roads for all Fijians.
