The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji is ramping up its efforts to enhance road safety by taking strong measures against irresponsible drivers. As of December 9, 2024, the LTA has canceled 62 driving licenses and suspended 21 others due to reckless behavior linked to accidents.

LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa emphasized that the authority’s commitment goes beyond punitive actions, incorporating education and prevention strategies. To address unsafe driving practices, the LTA has conducted 107 counseling sessions across its branches. During these sessions, a total of 1,366 first warnings, 297 second warnings, and 155 final warnings were issued to drivers.

Rokosawa remarked that these initiatives reflect the LTA’s zero-tolerance policy regarding misconduct. He affirmed their dedication to maintaining safe roads, stating, “We will not hesitate to cancel more licenses if drivers continue to disobey the law and put lives at risk.” The LTA has also put 39 client IDs on hold for serious violations, with one case referred for further audit.

The overarching goal of these measures, according to Rokosawa, is to save lives and curb accidents. By holding offenders accountable and getting dangerous drivers off the roads, the LTA aims to significantly decrease preventable traffic incidents. “Every license we cancel or suspend is one less potential threat on the road,” he added, stressing the importance of driver responsibility for the safety of everyone on the road.

In a hopeful and positive light, these actions by the LTA foster a culture of accountability and safety among drivers in Fiji, signaling a proactive approach to creating a safer driving environment for all. The emphasis on education alongside enforcement showcases a balanced strategy that could lead to long-term improvements in road safety.
