The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji has recently revoked the driver licenses of eight individuals involved in fatal accidents, demonstrating a strict stance on road safety. Among those penalized is a 21-year-old truck driver whose actions resulted in the tragic death of a 13-year-old student in Tacirua last week.

LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa announced that these individuals faced showcause proceedings under Regulation 30 of the Land Transport (Driver) Regulations 2000, ultimately leading to the cancellation of their licenses. The truck driver, who was driving with an expired Learners Permit during the incident, has had his license revoked for five years as a reflection of the serious nature of the accident.

Rokosawa indicated that the LTA is working closely with the Fiji Police Force to push for increased penalties for habitual traffic offenders and to reevaluate ongoing traffic regulations. Under the Crimes Act 2009, reckless driving that jeopardizes human life can result in up to two years of imprisonment. The LTA’s commitment to zero tolerance for reckless driving is reinforced by this recent action, emphasizing the importance of adhering to licensing conditions and promoting safety on the roads.

The CEO noted that driving is not only a personal responsibility but a social obligation. He stressed that negligence while driving can lead to devastating consequences, urging drivers to take their responsibilities seriously. The LTA’s ongoing efforts include routine inspections and speed checks to combat reckless driving behaviors such as speeding and distracted driving.

As the festive season approaches, the LTA is emphasizing the necessity of a shift in mindset among drivers to ensure everyone’s safety on the roads. The current statistics indicate a slightly reduced death toll—61 fatalities compared to 76 for the same period last year. However, every life lost is a tragedy, and the LTA is calling on all road users to prioritize safety.

This proactive approach by the LTA is a positive step towards fostering safer roads for all Fijians. As awareness grows about the importance of responsible driving, it is hoped that incidents of reckless behavior will diminish, leading to a safer driving environment during the busy festive period and beyond.
