The Land Transport Authority (LTA) in Fiji is stepping up its battle against the growing problem of illegal rental car operations. LTA Board Chair Inosi Kuridrani has issued a firm warning to unlicensed operators, emphasizing that the authority will take decisive measures to tackle this issue. Kuridrani expressed concern over the rise of unauthorized rental services, which not only pose safety risks but also undermine tax compliance and fairness in the industry.

The LTA is committed to reviewing existing policies to impose stricter penalties as part of a broader strategy to deter these unlawful practices. Kuridrani stated that preserving the integrity of the rental car industry is paramount, affirming their dedication to ensuring that only licensed and reputable services thrive within a regulated framework.

During the recent annual general meeting of the Fiji Rental Car Association, members voiced their apprehensions regarding illegal operations that jeopardize the legitimate rental sector. The ongoing discussions underscore the collaborative effort between operators and regulatory bodies aimed at creating a more equitable transportation landscape in Fiji.

This increased focus on enforcement against rogue rental operators mirrors similar challenges faced by the taxi industry, where illegal “pirate taxis” have also been a significant concern. The LTA’s proactive stance is a hopeful indicator of prospective improvements in regulatory oversight and operational standards for rental and public transport services, paving the way for enhanced safety and fairness for consumers and legal operators alike.

By engaging constructively with the concerns raised by rental car operators and addressing the illegal market, the LTA aims to foster a more stable and reputable rental industry that benefits all stakeholders involved. There is optimism that these efforts will lead to a more accountable and safe transportation network throughout Fiji.
