The Fiji Court of Appeal is set to hear the bail application pending appeal from former Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho, who is currently serving a one-year sentence. Qiliho appeared in court alongside former Prime Minister Bainimarama, who was granted an early release last month.
Both Qiliho and Bainimarama were convicted by the High Court in Suva on March 14. During the recent court proceedings, their lawyer, Devanesh Sharma, informed the court that they would be withdrawing their motion concerning the conviction and sentencing that had been filed in April of the previous year. He noted that this motion was related to appealing the sentencing and expressed optimism that Qiliho would receive an early release similar to that of Bainimarama.
Justice Chandana Prematilaka granted the lawyers 21 days to prepare their submissions for the bail application, after which the State has until January 21 to respond. Sharma will then have until January 28 to provide a reply to the State’s prosecution response, with the next hearing scheduled for January 30.
This case highlights the ongoing legal proceedings involving prominent figures in Fiji, and it reflects the judicial process at work. The news provides a glimpse into the potential for changes in sentencing based on appeals, showing that the legal system allows for further examination of convictions.
In a hopeful light, the progress in their legal matters may indicate a pathway for fair representation and justice, fostering a belief in the possibility of reform and rehabilitation. The upcoming court dates will be pivotal as both sides prepare for what could be significant decisions for Qiliho’s future.
