The Fiji Court of Appeal has denied a bail application from Solomoni Qurai, who is currently serving a life sentence for the 2006 murder of Mohammed Azim Khan. The court deemed the appeal “frivolous” and lacking in legal merit.
Qurai’s life sentence is without remission, and both his conviction and sentence have previously been upheld by the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court. Justice Isikeli Mataitoga ruled that the application was misleading, highlighting that there was no ongoing appeal before the court.
In his ruling on January 21, Justice Mataitoga emphasized that the matter was conclusively settled when the Supreme Court rejected Qurai’s request for special leave and confirmed the decision made by the Court of Appeal. This ruling effectively closes the door on any further legal challenges from Qurai regarding his conviction and sentence.
This outcome underscores the finality of the judiciary’s decisions in serious criminal cases, where the legal systems are upheld to maintain justice and order.
