The Fiji Corrections Services (FCS) has announced the results of its Job Evaluation Exercise (JEE), which has successfully identified 81 new positions in various areas, including administration, technical roles, and among ranking officers. This initiative has received backing from the Cabinet and was included in the national budget provisions for the current financial year.

Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga shared updates with Parliament, emphasizing that traditional practices of promotions and demotions will not be applicable going forward. He highlighted that future rank movements will depend on the specific positions to which officers are assigned, along with their individual performance and the operational requirements of the organization.

Turaga remarked that the restructuring aims to modernize human resources policies within the organization and adapt to the evolving needs of the FCS by incorporating these new posts over the next three financial years. He pointed out the critical need to realign the pay structure to accurately reflect personnel’s experience, qualifications, and the demands of their roles.

It’s noteworthy that the last Job Evaluation Exercise took place approximately 40 years ago. The current assessment has allowed the organization to clearly define job descriptions for different officer roles, leading to the development of an updated organizational chart that includes the new positions—a change that was not seen in the previous administration.

This significant update marks a positive step towards improving the operational efficiency and effectiveness of the Fiji Corrections Services, setting a foundation for better resource allocation and personnel management in the future. The proactive approach taken by the Ministry speaks to a commitment to professional standards and organizational growth.

In summary, the FCS is embracing a significant transformation that could lead to enhanced performance and accountability among its officers while introducing clearly defined roles and responsibilities that meet contemporary demands.
