The Fiji Corrections Service has introduced a new policy aimed at promoting high standards of personal conduct and integrity among its personnel. The Personal Conduct and Marital Integrity Policy underscores the necessity of maintaining professional and ethical standards within the service, highlighting the duty of all staff to exhibit behavior that enhances the reputation of FCS.

This new policy will establish clear guidelines regarding conduct related to marital and committed relationships, specifically targeting behaviors like extramarital affairs that could tarnish the image of the service. Additionally, it outlines expectations for maintaining professional behavior both inside and outside of the workplace, acknowledging that FCS officers are entrusted with a significant level of public trust.

Commissioner of Corrections, Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, expressed that the policy demonstrates FCS’s dedication to professionalism, integrity, and fostering public confidence. He emphasized that integrity in personal relationships is not merely a private issue for FCS employees, but rather affects public perception of the service.

“Maintaining integrity in personal relationships is not just a private matter for FCS staff. It directly impacts how the service is perceived by the public. This policy sends a clear message that we expect our officers to be role models of ethical behavior and to maintain high standards both in their personal lives and professional duties,” stated Dr. Nakarawa.

The policy will be applicable to all employees of the Fiji Corrections Service and includes provisions for support mechanisms, such as counseling services, for employees facing personal difficulties. Once implemented, any violations of the policy could lead to disciplinary actions ranging from counseling and reprimands to suspension or termination, depending on the level of severity of the breach.

Currently, the policy is under review and will undergo consultations before it is officially implemented.
