Fiji Corrections Service Unveils Controversial Conduct Policy

The Fiji Corrections Service has introduced a new policy aimed at promoting high standards of personal conduct and integrity among its officers and staff.

The proposed Personal Conduct and Marital Integrity Policy highlights the significance of maintaining professional and ethical standards within the organization, emphasizing the obligation of all personnel to exhibit behavior that reflects positively on the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS).

This policy will provide clear guidelines regarding conduct in marital and committed relationships, specifically addressing behaviors such as extramarital affairs that may tarnish the reputation of the service.

Furthermore, the policy sets out expectations for professional behavior both inside and outside the workplace, recognizing that FCS officers are entrusted with a high level of public confidence.

Commissioner of Corrections, Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, remarked that the policy underscores FCS’s dedication to professionalism, integrity, and maintaining public trust. He highlighted that integrity in personal relationships is not a private matter for the staff, as it influences public perception of the service.

Dr. Nakarawa stated, “Maintaining integrity in personal relationships is not just a private matter for FCS staff. It directly impacts how the service is perceived by the public. This policy sends a clear message that we expect our officers to be role models of ethical behavior and to maintain high standards in both their personal lives and professional responsibilities.”

The Personal Conduct and Marital Integrity Policy will be applicable to all employees within the Fiji Corrections Service. In addition, the policy includes support mechanisms, such as counseling services, for employees facing personal challenges.

Once the policy is adopted, any violations may result in disciplinary actions, which can range from counseling and reprimands to suspension or termination, dependent on the severity of the infraction.

Currently, the policy is under review and will undergo consultations prior to its official implementation.
