The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has reiterated its commitment to integrity, discipline, and security following the dismissal of five correction officers who tested positive for illegal substances during recent random drug testing. This action aligns with the FCS’s strict zero-tolerance approach towards drug use among its personnel.

Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, the Commissioner of Corrections, underscored the significance of maintaining high professional standards within correctional facilities. He stated, “The Fiji Corrections Service remains committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity, discipline, and security within all correctional institutions nationwide.” To enhance security and reduce the risk of drugs and contraband entering the system, the FCS has introduced a series of stringent measures, including random searches of officers and drug testing.

The correction officers involved were flagged through an unannounced drug testing initiative designed to ensure that those responsible for enforcing the law also comply with it themselves. The FCS has promised to continue with regular and surprise drug tests and searches to ensure adherence to its rigorous internal regulations.

This strong action underscores the FCS’s resolve to maintain a safe, secure, and drug-free environment for both its officers and the inmates they supervise. Correction officers are urged to exemplify ethical behavior and steadfast discipline in their roles.

In light of these developments, the FCS is calling on all its staff to uphold these principles, thereby reinforcing public trust in the integrity of Fiji’s correctional system. This commitment to integrity not only enhances the operational environment within prisons but also serves as a model of accountability and responsibility in public service.
